Benjamin Zander is an English conductor who was born in Buckinghamshire, England. He grew up and had escaped the horrors of the Nazi regime. He would gain interest in music from a young age, with his father playing piano and singing at home around him. He would compose his music at the age of nine, and he would begin to spend his time focusing on musical theory and production.
Zander would focus on playing the cello, and he would be only ten years old and the youngest member of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain at the age of twelve. He would study all over Europe, focusing on his musical interest, studying at Brandeis and Harvard Universities in the 1960s. He would join the New England Conservatory of Music and remain with the faculty from 1967 until 2012.
Currently, Benjamin is the conductor and the music director of the Boston Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. They rehearse in the city's South End at the Benjamin Franklin Institute of Technology. In his personal life, he married Patricia Zander in 1966, and they had a daughter, Jessica. He is also a grandfather to two girls, Maya and Vivian-Rose.
